The Power of Social Media

Here’s a short example of the power of social media and how its reach is amazing.

Like most entrepreneurs, especially those in digital marketing, I have thousands of connections in all of my social media channels. I have some type of connection to each one of them since I do not friend or ask to connect to random people.

Do I personally know each and every one of my connections? Of course not. However, I do engage with all of them, through posts, newsletters, likes, shares, tweets, retweets, etc., etc.

Why am I telling you this? Is there a point to this tale? Of course, there is. My wife and I were at the wedding of the son of very dear long-time friends of ours this past weekend. There were three couples at our table that we had never personally met before. The wives said to me, you look very familiar and when I introduced myself they all said as they laughed, we are connected on LinkedIn, through our common friend, and we receive your monthly newsletter. That lead to a great conversation since I already had credibility with them and they felt that they knew me. This would not have happened without the social media connection that then leads to a real-life connection.

The moral of the story is, make sure there is some connection to your social media friends, engage with them and make yourself memorable to them. And most importantly, always have a professional photo on your profile. You never know when you will run into a virtual friend in real life!
